Gary Nevins, long time directory publisher and member of ADP, has decided to retire after 35 years in the industry. Gary began his career in Miami, FL in 1980 as a DASR with Southern Bell. He left what was then BellSouth Yellow Pages in 1985 and became the Chairman / Founder of Florida Keys Yellow Pages, one of the early independents. After thirteen years of continuous growth and success, including seven ANADP/ADP Gold Book Awards, he sold his company in 1998. After serving a year under a management agreement, Mr. Nevins was recruited by DataNational Publishing Company to be their State Sales Manager for Florida. While there, he exceeded revenue goals in the existing directories, as well as, starting up five more books in the Jacksonville area market. Soon afterward, TransWestern Publishing Company came calling when they acquired the Florida group of directories from the New York Times. Mr. Nevins became their District Sales Manager for both Florida and East Georgia. After three years, Gary was recruited by Yellow Book to serve as their Regional Sales Manager in South Florida (the Florida Keys and Key West) where he rebuilt the directories he started years earlier that were purchased from him and subsequently acquired by Yellow Book.
After success in the corporate sector, Gary felt the itch again for the entrepreneurial side of directory publishing. In 2004, he moved to Georgia and founded Plantation Publishing Company where he currently serves as President & CEO. Mr. Nevins created five successful titles in southwest Georgia that are all in contiguous markets. “This is my eleventh year guiding this company through good times and bad,” he said. “I have enjoyed the ride every step of the way. The people I have met as clients, as well as, those I have worked with will always be fond memories to look back on. The long list of community service positions held on behalf of my companies also brings great pride. However, my family would like to see more of me. I plan on doing a little traveling, fishing, reading and, possibly some more business building.”
As a result, I will be placing Plantation Publishing Company and its five directories up for sale. As with my books in the Keys and Key West, our phone books have been the market leader since early in the Company’s existence.
